Mark Kac’s model and approach to equilibrium in the Gabetta-Toscani-Wennberg metric d2
In 1956, Kac introduced a model with N >> 1 particles undergoing binary collisions, with the aim of deriving a Boltzmann-type equation. His model is ergodic. In this talk, I will introduce Kac’s model, and use the Fourier based d2 metric to show equilibration, and to provide states which initially \resist» approaching equilibrium for time of order 1.
